- Division is a notoriously difficult concept for primary children to grasp but if viewed as repeated subtraction - 'how many lots of........can I take from .....?' it becomes easier.
- The method we use is called chunking because, instead of taking away 'one lot of....' at a time, we take away 'easy to calculate' chunks of 10, 20, 30, etc lots at a time.
- Children will choose the largest size chunk they feel comfortable with, so some may repeatedly take away '10 lots of ....' until they gain the confidence to take away more.
- This method will lead easily and logically on to the shorter version used in secondary school.
